Let's face it; nobody would take their car to a hairdresser if it needed repairs, so why would anybody want to speak to a doctor with regards to an fitness program? After all, a doctor specializes in diagnosing various diseases and illnesses, rather than determining the exercise requirements of a wide range of people. Admittedly, doctors are of course aware of the fact that health and fitness stand side by side, and yes, they do always advise their patients to become involved in an exercise program.

Not everyone who loves to exercise is keen on weight lifting. In fact, some people who take part in physical activities like jogging, running, rowing, kickboxing and taekwondo, do so to become well built but they may well never lift weights. This is essentially because they firmly believe that when you lift weights, your muscles become hard and bulky. Additionally, many people are still under the impression that weight lifting is extremely difficult.

Muscle is in fact living tissue, unlike fat which is simply stored energy reserves. As with any other living matter, muscles require calories in order to survive. Interestingly enough, muscles burn calories whether they're working or not. In other words; even when you sleep, your muscles burn up calories. As a result of this, the more muscle you have, the more calories you will burn.

So, you've decided you'd like to get fit, loose weight and generally feel better? Of course you would, because why on earth would anyone not want to feel good about themselves. Can you benefit from a fitness program? Well, to be honest, let me first say that everyone stands to benefit from a fitness program, particularly if you're overweight or obese. The same can of course be said of anyone who suffers from high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes or even heart disease.

Can a heath and fitness coach help people with regards to fat loss? You wouldn't believe how many times people ask this question but then again, the thought of having a personal trainer on hand, does make the whole fat loss mission seem more possible, particularly if you've battled with your weight in the past. Unfortunately, because not many people understand fully what the role of a coach is, they never go beyond asking that initial quest.

Of course, just because someone is fond of exercise doesn't necessarily mean they're fond of weight training. In fact, there are many people involved in demanding sports such as taekwondo and kickboxing and yet they never lift weight. It seems that there are essentially two reasons for this: first, they believe that weight lifting automatically results in large bulky muscle, and second, they believe weight lifting is extremely difficult.

One should bear in mind that muscle is vastly different to fat. While fat is simply stored energy, muscle is living tissue and as such, it requires calories in order to survive. In fact, muscles require calories just to remain intact, whether they're actually working or not. What this means is, the more muscle you have, the more calories you'll use.
