When Jesus was discussing the new birth in John 3 he said, "unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God." (John 3:5 NKJV) A great many deny that the water of this passage is a reference to baptism. How have men perceived this historically?
Unless one knows when the kingdom of God came he cannot know when the king, Jesus, began to reign and thus when his law came into affect. One cannot be saved the way Jesus saved some before his law took affect.
Jesus' statements about the new birth in John 3:3-5 are not that difficult to understand until you decide you do not want water to be baptism.
