Talking and letter writing use to be the norm when it came to expressing ourselves for hundreds of years. Now what do we have ... cell phones, emails, fax machines, texting, podcasts and whatever else to get our meanings across?

When you become a parent remember: To be in your children’s memories tomorrow, you have to be in their lives today. Our words, reactions and non-verbal language skills are very powerful tools, especially with impressionable children. When we pause and think before correcting and/or providing feedback on what our children are doing, we can choose positive reinforcement over negative putdowns.
Stephen Covey in 7 Habits of Highly Effective Families says that responsibility is really the “ ability to choose our response.” We don’t have to respond to stimuli and triggers the same way we have always done.
How many times do I have to tell you to clean your room? Why should a child keep his room neat? Many children say they don’t care whether it is neat or dirty, so why should it matter to anyone else?
Successful parents have learned to be both firm and kind at the same time. They set boundaries and work with their children to help them understand that they will follow through with appropriate action if inappropriate behavior continues. Don’t think when I say firmness that I really mean strictness. Strictness deals with the child; firmness is more an extension of our resolve toward our decisions.
