The St. Lawrence Seaway and the Welland Canal allow cargo ships to access the Great Lakes, allowing industries like metal processing, food, and manufacturing to thrive. The North American metal stamping industry is centered on the Great Lakes and so the Welland Canal in its position between Lake Erie and Lake Ontario is a critical link from the U.S. Midwest to the Atlantic Ocean. The canal was disabled on August 11, 2001 which caused economic disaster for well over a year.
