Taking an honest look at the HP LaserJet 1012 printer reveals another model from Hewlett-Packard that has been well-designed and ready to deliver good print speed and reliable quality. They offer it at a seriously nice price, given that it is a laser monochrome printer able to make good use of several different Windows operating systems, as well as being compatible with Macs. It would seem it's a good choice for the home user, with the HP LaserJet 1012 toner producing prints that should meet most every need.

At one point in time, the HP 1012 was Hewlett-Packard's lowest price black-and-white laser printer. Even today, it's still a very nicely priced model and can be found selling at a number of different outlets for around $195. Refurbished units are all over the Internet and at various prices less than that. HP supports the 1012 with its own website where a number of useful drivers and other items can be had.

As far as print speed, nobody would say that this HP printer is a speed demon, but it also isn't a slowpoke either. HP rates the print speed at about 15 ppm, while testing from independent evaluators shows it is close to reaching that mark, coming in at a little bit above 13 ppm depending on whether the print job contains a lot of graphics. Given its decent price, the speed would seem to be little to be concerned over.

Hewlett-Packard probably intends that this printer be used more in a small office or home office environment than as a workhorse printer in a workgroup of anything more than small size. It could do it, but there are other printers that are more likely candidates. There are a number of excellent and attractive features that make it a good candidate for the home office or small office, including nice quality 600 dpi print resolution.

When considering the resolution, consider also that any jobs sent to the printer will emerge looking crisp and clean, as well as sharp and business-like, even if it's just for a recipe for the latest Sunday dinner. If one accepts that the printer is intended more for small office or home office, one will be prepared to accept its print quality. That quality, while excellent, would not be for serious client presentation purposes. This matters little, though, at its price point.

When it comes to how easily be 1012 can be connected to a computer or even a workgroup, Hewlett-Packard has supplied a single high-speed USB port. There is no other way to connect it, although this is not a problem. Older networks may require parallel ports and if that's the case it might be that a couple of other printers in a higher level Hewlett-Packard series would be better candidates.

This HP printer comes standard with 8 MB of RAM, but it will make use of an attached computer's internal processing power, so it's not really a big deal that only 8 MB would be available. The 133 MHz processor will attend quite capably to the various functions of the 1012 and though it's not the speediest of processors it still does its job just fine. This printer also holds 160 total sheets of paper in an auto load input tray and a custom slot, which is a nice amount of paper to have.

Taking an honest look at the HP LaserJet 1012 printer, especially that nice price, should be more than enough to convince most prospective customers that this device should be on their list of printers to consider. This is especially true for the home office or small office environment that requires a laser jet printer with decent print speeds and nice durability (monthly duty cycle for the 1012 comes in at 5,000 pages). It would appear the 1012 hits all those marks quite nicely.

The HP Color LaserJet 8550n cartridges also hits the mark when it comes to the presentation you'd like to make. Ensuring you have enough HP toner cartridges on hand for any larger job is easy with online retailers offer printer toner at exceptional prices, with fast shipping to any location you need.
