At least the place to go when in Bangkok, Thailand is the Reclining Buddha in Pranon Wat Pho located in the Phra Nakhon district. Wat Pho is the largest and oldest wat (wat means temple) in Bangkok and houses more than one thousand Buddha images. The Reclining Buddha is one of the largest single Buddha statues around. It was built in the 16th Century surrounded by a quiet fishing village. Present day when you are inside, you notice nothing of the hectic life outside its walls.

In Bangkok you will find hundreds of Buddhist temples all decorated with the nicest sculptures. What makes the Lying Buddha different is the fact that it is completely made of gold(leaf) with mother-of-pearl inserts on its eyes and feet. The feet display 108 auspicious scenes in Chinese and Indian styles. The statue illustrates Buddha passing into nirvana.

This impressive view (you can search on internet for photos) will awe anyone seeing the statue. It doesn't matter if you see it for the first time or that you have been here many times before. It is really a must to see when you are there. When walking in Wat Pho, the first thing you will notice is the silence. Forget about the other tourists around you and listen to the silence and sounds of nature.

No wonder it was a place for yoga and traditional Thai massage in the old days. People came here to relax and energize. Nowadays people still come here for their rest and to get a massage from one of the oldest Thai massageschools. It costs almost nothing and you get one of the best massages in the country. It is worth to try it. After visiting this temple you can go to the Grand Palace which is across the street. This will show you Thai heritage at its best.

The best way to make sure you see everything is to go to Wat Pho in the morning and finish there around 12-13 o'clock. You can eat at one of the many small restaurants around the wat. Prices are low and you will get a good meal. After that go to the Grand Palace and finish your day of sightseeing there. In one day you will have seen enough to tell a good story at home.
