The documents used for official travel between countries are called passports. The presentation of those documents is required before border officials permit persons to cross the borders between the countries. Passports should be handled carefully so that damage to them can be avoided as damage might interfere with their reading or scanning. A damaged US passport is difficult to process and should therefore be fixed.

Reporting The Damage

If passports do not have extensive damage they may not need to be reported to authorized agencies. Nevertheless, because there is a possibility that airline officials might reject them, those passports should be remedied. Replacement of the document is the most likely solution to that problem and this should be accomplished as soon as possible.

Keep The Damaged Document

For an effective solution, a report could be made to authorized agencies concerning the document while simultaneously applying for a replacement. At the time of applying, the document should be produced. Such submission allows the documents to be officially checked in order to satisfy two criteria. The criteria are the confirmation of the identities of the owners, and the elimination of suspected fraudulent tampering regarding the documents.

Picture Removal

Persons may try to remove photographs from passports in attempts at stealing the identities of unsuspecting victims. The usual intent, in those cases, is the replacement of original pictures with theirs or those of their clients. Replacements of a similar nature may be attempted as well for names and dates. The authorities would be able to detect those attempts, nevertheless.

Other Documents

After being thoroughly checked, the passports may or may not be returned to the owners even if they pass the inspection. Authentic birth certificates with complete information, along with papers of naturalization or older undamaged passports, must also be submitted. In addition, a valid license issued to drivers, national identification or picture identification from the military or the government is acceptable.

Photograph Replacement

Applicants also need to submit photographs for the replacement passports. The photographs should be identical as well as passport-sized and there should be two of them. There are specific places where these pictures may be obtained, including some agencies that facilitate the application process. The pictures must be of a high quality as poor quality photographs delay the replacement process.

Fees

The process of replacement requires that fees be paid. One of the fees covers the process of verifying the application and the other expedites the replacement process. Both fees are payable to the agent in charge at application and different methods of payment are accepted. The methods include checks, excepting starter checks, debit cards, cash or money orders. Credit cards are not an acceptable method, though. Finally, a special passport application is provided for supplying an explanation of the damages to the passports.

Replacing a damaged U.S. passport is advisable in order to prevent it being rejected at borders and by airlines. Replacements may be done at authorized agencies. Certain fees must be paid and specific passport application forms requirements carried out for replacement to be facilitated.
