When you leave the country, you have to have a passport. Anyone in America knows that you have to have this to leave the country and to get back into the country. What happens when you have a damaged USA passport?

Some traveling buddies of ours were curious about this and we decided to look this up for them so they would know what they had to do to fix that. Some of you might think that you can leave your passport damaged if it's minimal damage.

However, this isn't true. Here is the documentation indicating that you will need to fix your damaged USA passport.

The reason that you don't want to travel with a damaged passport is due to the trouble that it could cause. You might wonder how much trouble you could get into. While America is a bit lenient on that sort of thing, other countries aren't.

The people working where you have to show your passport know minimal English and so forth. They know what they are to be looking for. If they can't read it or find what is to be there to show them that you have permission to be there, things could get a bit ugly.

Let's look at the first form you will need to get a priority passport. This is the DS-11 form. Now, you can fill this form out. You can find this online. However, the one thing that you need to make sure that you don't do is that you don't sign and date it.

This has to be signed and dated when you are at the passport agency in your local area. If you sign it ahead of time, they will make you start over so that you can sign it in front of them.

The other form that you will have to fill out is called the DS-64 form. This is the form that tells them that you had a passport before but one out of three things has happened.

These things are you lost it, had it stolen or you damaged it. The thing you want to note about this is that they want specific detail. If you don't have this, then they won't accept your request.

The other thing you have to have is proof that you are a citizen of the United States. You will find that you have to show proof with either something from naturalization or an original birth certificate. If you are a legal citizen and you were born in the United States, then you will need your birth certificate. With this as well, you will need two photos.

The thing to know with the photos is that they have to be taken a certain way. You can't be smiling. They have to be 2 inches by 2 inches. They also have to be taken against a white background. If you do not have this, you will be denied. On top of that, you have to make sure that those pictures aren't older than six months.

Now, there are some of you who might need these as soon as possible. You might be going out of country. However, if you are in this position, then you have to prove to them that you are going to take this trip quickly.

The other thing you will have to do is pay them. How much you fee will be will all depend on a number of things you are trying to accomplish. However, you do have to pay a State Department processing fee.

Now that you have a better understanding of these papers and such, you can get your damaged pass port taken care of. Why put your travel plans on hold? You might have thought it would be harder than this. While this is a bit that you have to do, it's nothing compared to what some have to go through. Maybe getting a express passport might be more prudent. Don't take a risk by not doing so.
